A former police constable has received a one-year prison sentence after soliciting a $200 bribe from an individual in Suva between October 22 and November 9, 2021. Adrian Joseph Mangru, who was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) under the Prevention of Bribery Act, initially pleaded not guilty but later changed his plea during the trial.

At just 27 years old, Mangru, who is married with children, had reached out to the victim regarding a traffic case he was investigating. He informed the individual that the case was “fatal” and backed by substantial evidence, implying that he could assist in avoiding a 14-day remand if the victim paid him $200. When the victim failed to provide the requested money, Mangru was arrested and subsequently charged.

During the sentencing, Mangru expressed remorse for his actions and sought forgiveness. However, the prosecution argued for a custodial sentence due to the gravity of his breach of trust as a police officer. Magistrate Joseph Daurewa ruled that there were no exceptional circumstances to suspend the sentence, highlighting that Mangru’s actions exhibited significant planning and a clear motive for financial gain.

Mangru has been given 28 days to file an appeal against the ruling. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity within law enforcement and the legal consequences of corruption.
