Former Chief Executive of the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, along with current Chief Financial Officer, Vimlesh Sagar, are set to enter their pleas next month following charges brought against them by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC). The two appeared today in the Suva Magistrates Court, where the prosecution sought additional time to provide details of the case.
FICAC representatives urged Sayed-Khaiyum and Sagar to enter their pleas; however, the defense counsel insisted that they would only do so once the particulars of the case were presented. Sayed-Khaiyum faces two charges: one for abuse of office and another for general dishonesty that allegedly led to a financial loss. Similarly, Sagar is charged with one count of general dishonesty causing a loss.
The charges relate to an incident involving the procurement of a vehicle valued at $207,470.00, which has raised concerns regarding proper procedure and use of funds. The court has rescheduled the matter for March 5th, when both defendants are expected to formally enter their pleas.
This case highlights ongoing efforts to address corruption within institutions in Fiji, and the proceedings continue to attract public interest as they unfold.
