Fiji National University (FNU) has demonstrated its strong commitment to combating violence against women and girls through its newly established Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy and Action Plan for 2024–2026. The university has made it clear that any acts of violence or discrimination against women will not be tolerated, either within its institution or in the wider community.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba emphasized FNU’s dedication to creating an environment that values, respects, and protects individuals. She stated, “Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights, and it has no place in our society.”
Furthermore, the Vice-Chancellor called on all Fijians to acknowledge the crucial roles women play across various sectors, asserting that they are essential for the nation’s progress and success. She remarked, “Women are no longer defined by traditional gender roles but are key contributors to education, business, health, and governance. It is imperative that we support and empower them to thrive.”
As Fiji observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which focuses on the theme “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” Professor Nabobo-Baba issued a rallying cry for collective action. She urged citizens to reflect on their responsibility in promoting a culture of respect and safety, to speak out against injustice, and to support survivors of violence. “Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build a future where women and girls can live with dignity and freedom from fear,” she added.
The GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan will steer FNU’s initiatives to ensure that gender equality is achieved and that a safe, inclusive environment is fostered for all individuals.
This initiative by FNU not only highlights the university’s proactive approach to social issues but also sets an inspirational standard for institutions nationwide to follow. As communities strengthen their collective commitment to ending gender-based violence, there is hope for a brighter future where equality and respect reign.
