The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) has taken decisive action against the Topline Warriors and Nabua Broncos rugby league clubs due to severe incidents of violence during a match on May 10, 2025. Following a brawl in the second half of their round one Vodafone Cup game at Buckhurst Park in Suva, the Topline Warriors are facing a two-year ban from all FNRL-sanctioned competitions. This suspension arises from a history of repeated violent incidents and an overall failure to maintain the spirit of the game.

On the other hand, the Nabua Broncos have been fined $2,000, and their player wearing the number eight jersey has received a three-week suspension for participating in the fight and engaging in foul play. FNRL chairman Akuila Masi confirmed that both clubs were informed of the penalties after a hearing was held to review the situation.

Masi remarked that while the Topline Warriors have been issued with a two-year ban, there is an appeal process available. He stated that the committee would review further video footage to provide accurate feedback regarding the appeal. Notably, Masi emphasized that discussions were held with both teams post-hearing, focusing on improving team culture and addressing the detrimental image created during the match, which does not align with rugby league’s values.

This incident is not unique, as concerns regarding violence within the sport have been rising, with past matches exhibiting similar troubles. However, there’s a collective hope that through ongoing dialogue between community leaders, local authorities, and the FNRL, these challenges could inspire proactive measures aimed at enhancing safety protocols and encouraging a more respectful atmosphere in the sport.

The FNRL’s commitment to addressing these issues underlines the importance of sportsmanship and the integrity of the game, and the decisions taken mark a significant step towards fostering a culture that protects both players and fans, ensuring a positive rugby environment for everyone involved.
