Flood Safety Alert: Residents Urged to Avoid Contaminated Waters Amid Cyclone Concerns

Residents of Naodamu, Labasa, are advised against using floodwaters in their compounds due to concerns over sewage outlets being compromised. This warning was issued by officials from the Water Authority of Fiji, who noted that heavy rainfall from Tropical Cyclone Rae has led to significant flooding in the area. The potential for sewage contamination in the floodwaters poses serious health risks, particularly for children, prompting health officials to urge residents to avoid contact with the water.

Community headman Ropate Rakuro acknowledged that flooding is a recurring issue in the region, particularly during cyclone season, but expressed confidence that the community is well-prepared for such events. He stated, “We’re thankful that at most times it’s not seeping into the house. The water level just reached the doorway and goes back, but looking at TC Rae, we feel that it will get into our homes if more rain comes by midnight, so we are preparing for that.”

To further protect residents, particularly children, authorities are recommending that drinking water be boiled and that communities stay clear of stagnant water to minimize health risks. In response to the flooding, Khalsa College and Holy Family School in Labasa have been designated as evacuation centers for those affected, providing safe shelter for residents.

This incident coincides with broader weather-related challenges across Fiji, as highlighted by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, who has been stressing the importance of safety during severe weather conditions. He has emphasized the need for residents to limit unnecessary movement and avoid gatherings, reflecting a proactive stance to safeguard public health and wellbeing during this tumultuous period.

As local communities band together and adhere to health guidelines, there is a sense of unity and resilience that can help them weather this storm, drawing on the strength inherent in their collective response to adversity.
