Residents of Naodamu, Labasa, are being cautioned against using floodwaters in their compounds due to concerns that sewage outlets may have been compromised as a result of heavy rains from Tropical Cyclone Rae. The Water Authority of Fiji has issued this warning due to the potential health risks posed by sewage contamination in the floodwaters, particularly for children. Officials are urging the community to avoid any contact with the floodwaters to protect their health.

Community headman Ropate Rakuro acknowledged that flooding is a frequent challenge in the area during cyclone season. He expressed confidence that the community is generally well-prepared for such occurrences but also recognized the risks posed by heavy rains. “We’re thankful that at most times it’s not seeping into the house. The water level just reached the doorway and goes back, but looking at TC Rae, we feel that it will get into our homes if more rain comes by midnight, so we are preparing for that,” he stated.

To further safeguard the health of residents, especially children, authorities recommend boiling drinking water and staying away from stagnant water to minimize any potential health risks. In response to the flooding, Khalsa College and Holy Family School in Labasa have been designated as evacuation centers for those affected, providing safe shelter for impacted residents.

This situation is part of a larger trend of weather-related challenges across Fiji. The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development has underscored the importance of safety during severe weather conditions, urging residents to limit unnecessary movement and avoid gatherings. This proactive approach reflects a commitment to public health and wellbeing during these difficult times.

As local communities come together and follow health guidelines, there is a spirit of unity and resilience that may help them navigate this challenging situation. Their collective strength and preparedness could prove vital as they face this storm, illustrating the power of community in times of adversity.
