Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad has challenged the assertions made by Savenaca Narube, the leader of Unity Fiji, along with other politicians he deems unimportant. Prof. Prasad expressed confusion regarding their claim that the Government is powerless to address rising living costs.

His remarks came in response to criticism from Mr. Narube, who accused the Government of prioritizing wage increases while neglecting the struggles of ordinary families. Mr. Narube highlighted several concerns, including the ongoing rise in living expenses, increasing corruption, a growing drug crisis, and escalating national debt.

In a statement, Mr. Narube commented, “The cost of living is increasing, yet the Minister of Finance argues that the Government is incapable of taking action and lays blame on citizens for their high expectations. Corruption is on the rise, yet there does not seem to be a strategy to combat it. The drug situation poses a serious threat to our children’s future, and yet all aspects of this issue remain unaddressed.”

Responding to these criticisms, Professor Prasad pointed to several positive economic indicators, including a reported economic growth rate of approximately 3.8%, decreasing inflation, increasing investments, thriving businesses, and a booming tourism sector. He emphasized that through robust macroeconomic management, the Government has placed national debt on a sustainable trajectory.

Prof. Prasad accused Mr. Narube of failing to present any workable solutions to the issues raised and characterized the criticisms as unfounded. He encouraged Mr. Narube, a former governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, to conduct a thorough review of the available data and the Government’s policies before making such claims.

The Deputy Prime Minister further explained that improvements in income levels and living standards have been observed, along with substantial government investments in key areas including health, water, drainage, and agriculture. He also highlighted the formation of the Narcotics Bureau, efforts to expose large-scale drug operations, and initiatives aimed at establishing drug rehabilitation centers in partnership with corrections services and the Ministry of Health.

In a call for collaborative action, Prof. Prasad noted the Government’s commitment to enhance drug awareness and prevention through the involvement of various stakeholders including families, schools, religious institutions, NGOs, development partners, and the Government itself.

The ongoing dialogue surrounding these issues reflects the complexities of governance and public service, as political leaders engage in discussions regarding economic management, social challenges, and community welfare. It presents an opportunity for stakeholders to work together to foster a more resilient society, addressing both current challenges and future threats effectively.

In summary, while criticisms about living costs and social issues are prevalent, the Government is taking steps to address these challenges, and ongoing dialogue among leaders may help ensure that relevant solutions are brought to the forefront.
