Health authorities in the Western Division are intensifying their efforts to combat the heightened public health risks posed by heavy rainfall and flooding. In response to these concerns, health professionals across the region are participating in a rigorous three-day Divisional Outbreak Response Training designed to enhance early detection and rapid response capabilities for communicable diseases.

This annual training program unites a diverse group of healthcare workers including doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, health inspectors, and public health officers from various areas such as Sigatoka, Nadi, Rakiraki, Tavua, Lautoka, and Ba. By fostering a coordinated and multi-disciplinary response network, the initiative aims to prepare the region for potential health emergencies.

The training, facilitated by the Fiji Centre for Disease Control and the Environmental Health Unit, with backing from the World Health Organization, emphasizes practical skills essential for navigating high-risk weather conditions. Participants are instructed in critical areas such as enhanced disease surveillance, data analysis, laboratory testing, clinical management, and public health interventions—all aimed at ensuring timely containment of any potential outbreaks.

A significant outcome of this training initiative is the creation of actionable outbreak response plans that are specifically tailored for the Western Division. This strategic approach is expected to improve coordination and decision-making during health crises, enhancing the community’s overall preparedness.

Officials assert that such proactive measures greatly improve local resilience against emerging infectious disease threats, ultimately bolstering the division’s capacity to safeguard public health and protect communities during challenging times. As heavy rainfall remains a concern, these educational efforts signal a commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of the population.
