The Fiji Meteorological Service has projected a likelihood of normal to above-average rainfall across the Fiji Islands during the dry season from June to August 2025. Despite being known as a typically drier period, factors from other climate influences could lead to unexpected precipitation levels.

Currently, the tropical Pacific Ocean is experiencing ENSO-neutral conditions, suggesting that the influences of El Niño or La Niña are not at play. Models indicate that this neutral pattern may continue through to the latter parts of 2025. During this ENSO-neutral phase, it is often observed that other climate influences predominantly dictate weather patterns, which may explain the forecasted rainfall.

Looking specifically at the June to August window, the Fiji group, including Rotuma, is likely to receive normal to above-normal rainfall. However, as the seasons transition into September through November 2025, predictions become less certain, with equal chances of experiencing below-normal, normal, or above-normal rainfall across the islands.

The 2024-25 tropical cyclone season is expected to conclude at the end of April, yet it is important to remain cautious as out-of-season tropical cyclones cannot be entirely ruled out. This caution is echoed in forecasts earlier for January to April 2025, where similar concerns were raised regarding substantial rainfall and potential impacts on the agricultural sector.

In tandem, while farmer communities might be anxious about the challenges associated with heavy rainfall—such as flooding—the overall sentiment leans towards optimism. Such conditions can help replenish water supplies and bolster agricultural outputs, leading to healthier crops and better long-term sustainability for Fiji’s agriculture-dependent economy. Staying informed and proactive in preparation can help communities harness the positive aspects of these weather patterns.

The forecasts highlight a dual narrative: the challenges of weather extremes juxtaposed against the opportunities for rejuvenation in the agricultural landscape, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of the communities in Fiji.
