Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica has reaffirmed the Coalition Government’s commitment to establishing a “future-focused economy” in Fiji, emphasizing the role of digital innovation, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and Indigenous empowerment. At the recent Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association breakfast meeting, Kamikamica shared a vision aimed at enhancing the tourism sector while fostering inclusive economic growth.
Kamikamica’s remarks highlighted the significance of strong digital infrastructure, including investments in submarine fiber optic cables and secure data centers, which are essential for bolstering Fiji’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector and overall digital economy. He stated, “This transformation is not about leaving anyone behind—it’s about lifting everyone together. We are preparing Fiji for the demands of a rapidly changing world.”
In line with the government’s strategic initiatives, Tourism Fiji CEO Brent Hill noted that despite fluctuations in visitor numbers earlier in the year, optimism remains high regarding the tourism industry. Hill pointed to a robust marketing response, particularly in Australia, where multiple campaigns were launched, yielding substantial results such as over 10,000 room nights for a single hotel.
Investment in the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector is gaining pace, with local operators increasingly providing diverse experiences, including hiking, biking, and culinary tours. Additionally, Hill announced ongoing projects that will add over 2,200 hotel rooms under development, enhancing Fiji’s hospitality offerings.
With nearly one million air arrivals and over 80,000 cruise passengers recorded last year, both Kamikamica and Hill emphasized the need for strategic infrastructure investment to sustain and maintain Fiji’s reputation as a premier travel destination. They expressed a unified sentiment that Fiji is not only adapting to change but actively shaping the future economic landscape of the region.
This collaborative approach between government and the tourism sector reflects a positive outlook as Fiji navigates its economic path forward, underscoring the potential for resilience and innovation in a rapidly evolving global scenario. Such efforts are fostering hope for a promising future, characterizing Fiji’s ambition to rise as a dynamic and inclusive economy in the Pacific.
