In anticipation of the 2025 Coca-Cola Games, over 100 police officers will be deployed at the HFC Bank Stadium, with heightened security measures in place to combat drug-related activities. Senior Superintendent of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe announced the police presence is a response to concerns about drug dealers potentially targeting this significant event, which spans three days.
Security preparations will feature a canine unit, including three teams strategically stationed at the stadium entrance, bus stations, and the Suva bus terminal. SSP Vusonilawe assured that attendees would undergo security checks before entry, reinforcing the commitment to maintaining safety during the games. He emphasized that the police are prepared to act decisively against any criminal elements.
Last month, police seized marijuana valued at $36 million, showcasing their ongoing efforts to curb drug availability in the community. SSP Vusonilawe expressed gratitude for these successes, noting that operations had been in place since March to disrupt drug trafficking before the Coca-Cola Games.
The proactive stance taken by the police aligns with initiatives highlighted by the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, who previously established a drug-free policy for the games. Measures include thorough bag checks and the use of technology, such as drones and CCTV, to ensure a secure environment for all participants.
These enforcement efforts resonate with previous events, such as the Nawaka 7s rugby tournament, where similar strategies have been implemented to combat drug misuse in sports. The collective goal is to inspire young athletes and foster a spirit of community by promoting healthy choices.
By enforcing strict security measures, the Fiji Police Force is not only hoping to safeguard the Coca-Cola Games but also send a clear message about the responsibility shared by all stakeholders to protect the youth involved in sports.
Through collaboration between law enforcement and local communities, there is a hopeful outlook towards creating an environment that encourages youth participation in athletics while celebrating their achievements and dedication.
