The Duavata Collective, a group of tourism operators in Fiji, showcased their commitment to sustainable tourism at the Fiji Tourism Exchange (FTE) 2025 held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort. Silina Bale, a member of the collective and founder of Finding Islands Tours, highlighted the core values of the group: cooperation and community engagement through tourism.

Bale emphasized that the collective offers authentic experiences that connect visitors with local communities across Fiji, including farm tours, honey and chocolate production, and adventure activities like hiking through the beautiful landscapes. The approach is rooted in the belief that tourism should be a collaborative effort, wherein local communities serve as guides, sharing their stories and culture with travelers.

Reflecting on the growing trend towards sustainable tourism, Bale noted the importance of what she calls “digital detox” experiences, encouraging visitors to engage more fully with their surroundings and less with technology. She stated, “We offer adventure tourism that allows travelers to forget about their screens and learn from hands-on experiences.”

The collective, which started in 2017, includes a variety of members such as Rivers Fiji, Talanoa Treks, and Namosi Eco Retreat, which all contribute to the mission of enhancing community involvement in tourism. This collaborative spirit aligns with broader industry trends discussed in other FTE events, showcasing the shift towards experiential tourism and sustainability.

Previously, industry leaders like Brent Hill from Tourism Fiji have echoed the importance of this community-centric approach in attracting tourists seeking authentic experiences. With sustainable practices now being prioritized, the FTE serves as a promising platform for further collaboration between local operators and international buyers, ultimately benefiting both the tourism sector and the communities it represents.

As Fiji’s tourism industry continues to adapt to global shifts and rising demand for responsible travel, the future appears bright, bolstered by a strong focus on community engagement and sustainable practices that promise long-term benefits for both visitors and locals alike.
