Fiji’s Taxi System Undergoes Major Shift: What’s Next?

The Fiji Taxi Association (FTA) is expressing support for the government’s recent decision to revert to the municipal stand and base taxi system, following criticisms regarding the efficacy of the previous Open Taxi Rank (OTR) system. General Secretary Ashwin Ashish Lal highlighted that the OTR, implemented by the previous administration without adequate consultation, has not delivered the intended results since its inception.

Lal emphasized that the OTR allowed for chaotic conditions in urban areas, with many taxis and even private vehicles operating unlawfully as taxis, exacerbating congestion and reducing service levels, especially in rural regions. He noted, “This system has never worked,” pointing out a lack of clear communication from the government’s side about how it was to function effectively.

The association has long criticized the OTR, advocating for a return to the base system that emphasizes a structured approach to taxi operations. Lal stated, “Bringing back the base system will allow taxis from rural areas operating in towns to return to their respective bases,” which would help in allocating services more efficiently where they are most needed.

The transition back to the traditional taxi base system is expected not only to restore order within the taxi sector but also to alleviate illegal taxi operations. According to the FTA, this change could present a significant opportunity to rectify longstanding issues in public transport, enhancing efficiency and improving service delivery for all Fijians.

In a hopeful development, stakeholders are optimistic that this legislative change could foster a sustainable, equitable transportation network. By integrating feedback from drivers and adhering to a community-oriented approach, the government aims to create a system that better meets the needs of both taxi operators and passengers, thereby promoting greater reliance on licensed taxi services.

This realignment in policy reflects ongoing efforts within the government to address transportation challenges and foster a more responsive and organized taxi service that can sustain Fiji’s growing demands.
