Sugar production in Fiji’s Northern Division faces significant challenges as heavy rainfall and flooding from Tropical Cyclone Rae have severely impacted sugarcane crops. While the cyclone has passed, concerns linger over waterlogged conditions that could jeopardize crop yields and overall production.
Cane farmer Brij Bushan highlighted the persistent issue of waterlogging in farm areas like Vunivau and Soasoa, where farmers have devoted substantial time and resources to maintaining their fields. Bushan noted that drainage systems need improvement to effectively channel water away from sugarcane plants, citing instances where floodwaters reached three feet on the main road in his cane fields, leaving approximately 10,000 tons of cane submerged.
This flooding comes as part of broader concerns that have been expressed in similar articles, where it has been noted that recent low-pressure systems caused widespread flooding detrimental to many sugarcane farms. The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has been active in response, deploying field survey teams to assess the damage across the Western and Northern regions. Dr. Vinesh Kumar, CEO of SRIF, has indicated a commitment to supporting farmers through evaluations and interventions, emphasizing the need for efficient distribution of assistance, particularly for those affected by flooding.
