A second mechanical harvester specifically designed for hilly terrain has been deployed in Nabou, Ba, reaffirming the Coalition Government’s commitment to address the unique challenges faced by farmers in Fiji’s rugged landscapes. Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, emphasized that the initiative aims to alleviate the burdens on farmers and includes plans for a specialized harvester that will arrive soon as part of a research and development program led by the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF).

Singh expressed the government’s dedication to mechanization, highlighting its importance in reducing physical strain on farmers and addressing the ongoing labor shortages felt across the sugarcane industry. “We’ve heard your concerns, and we’re committed to providing solutions,” he said, underscoring the government’s focus on improving the operational efficiency of Fiji’s sugar sector.

This latest development aligns with previous reports about a portable sugarcane harvester sourced from Kumiki Company Ltd in Japan. This innovative machine, capable of operating effectively on hilly terrain, is expected to enhance harvesting productivity and ease the labor challenges faced by farmers in high-elevation areas. With its design tailored for steep landscapes, this harvester promises to improve the working conditions for farmers and ensure sustainable agricultural practices moving forward.

Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, has emphasized that investment in mechanization is vital for the sugarcane industry’s sustainability, suggesting that without such advancements, the demands on labor could become overwhelming. Alongside fellow farmers, he acknowledged that the introduction of these harvesters could significantly impact the sugarcane farming community, enhancing their livelihoods and fostering a more resilient agricultural sector.

The arrival of new technology such as this harvester represents a hopeful step forward as Fiji navigates the complexities of farming in challenging terrains. By embracing innovation and mechanization, the sugarcane industry is poised for improved productivity and sustainability in the years to come.
