The sugar industry is experiencing a promising start to the crushing season, with three mills processing a total of 164,807 tonnes of cane as of Monday, reflecting an increase of 25,748 tonnes compared to the same period last year. This surge has been lauded by Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry, who has reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting sugarcane farmers and ensuring a smooth harvesting process.

Although some typical mechanical and operational challenges were initially faced, Singh assured that mill operations have normalized and that crushing is proceeding effectively. He praised the cooperative efforts of all stakeholders involved, especially highlighting the leadership of the new Permanent Secretary for the Sugar Industry.

Singh noted that the 18.5 percent rise in cane crushed not only signifies greater income for cane belt communities but also bolsters the prospects for Fiji’s sugar exports. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to guarantee timely harvesting and delivery of cane to the mills. Furthermore, following the national budget’s passage, the minister plans to visit farming communities to discuss the optimal use of grants and subsidies provided this year.

These developments align with earlier forecasts from the Fiji Sugar Corporation, which projected a 15 percent increase in production this season, raising hopes among farmers and industry stakeholders for a revitalized sugar sector. The optimism is grounded in favorable weather conditions and firm government support, which are crucial for enhancing productivity amid previous challenges faced by the industry.

The current season is positioned as a critical opportunity for growth and resilience within Fiji’s sugarcane farming sector, illustrating a collective commitment to overcoming past difficulties. As stakeholders work together, there is a hopeful outlook for what appears to be a fruitful 2025 season, potentially revitalizing the country’s vital agricultural landscape.
