Fiji's Rugby League Rising Stars: A New Era Begins!

Fiji’s Rugby League Revamp: Scouting for Future Stars!

Fiji’s rugby league scene is experiencing an exciting phase as the national team’s head coach, Wise Kativerata, actively seeks out fresh talent among secondary school players. Over the past weekend, he closely observed the first round of the Eastern Zone competition held in Suva, while his coaching team scouted players across various regions of Fiji looking for potential rugby stars.

Kativerata, a distinguished former captain of the Fiji Bati, has seen notable progress in the teams’ performance. He remarked, “What I saw in Suva last weekend is much improvement compared to last year and the year before.” He emphasized how teams are now effectively executing their plays, particularly by adhering to the rugby league’s six-tackle rule, rather than relying on styles typical in rugby union. This shift is a positive development for the future of rugby league in Fiji, indicating a more strategic understanding of the game.

After the tournaments, Kativerata plans to select promising athletes to join his development academies as part of an ongoing initiative to cultivate new talent. This weekend, he will extend his scouting efforts to Vanua Levu, while his coaching staff will be active in other regions throughout Fiji.

In addition to scouting, Kativerata has recently conducted a training workshop in Labasa, focusing on enhancing the foundational knowledge of rugby league among young players. His mission includes changing perceptions about rugby league by showcasing its merit alongside rugby sevens and fifteens, using examples of successful players from the North, such as Semi Valemi and Semi Radradra, to motivate aspiring athletes.

Furthermore, the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) is embarking on a six-year initiative aimed at expanding the sport, particularly in grassroots participation for both boys and girls. Alan Tuinasoni, the interim president of Northern State Rugby League, has also voiced the importance of enhancing women’s involvement in the sport.

This initiative reflects a strong commitment to inclusivity and player development in Fiji’s rugby league, suggesting a promising outlook for upcoming athletes. The slated competitions and strategic initiatives are poised to bolster participation and lay a robust foundation for future rugby league professionals. As these efforts unfold, they underscore the enthusiasm and talent present in Fiji, fostering hope for the sport’s continued growth and success.
