Illustration of Thirteen serious accidents draw concern

“Fiji’s Road Safety Crisis: What Drivers Must Know Now”

Thirteen serious road accidents have been reported in Fiji in the year to date, prompting authorities to raise concerns about road safety. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, the Director of Traffic and Transport Control, highlighted the need for increased caution as the academic year approaches.

SSP Divuana pointed out that a significant number of these accidents—specifically 11—were linked to drivers losing control of their vehicles, primarily due to speeding and fatigue. He emphasized the importance of careful planning for trips, suggesting that drivers should take regular breaks during long journeys and refrain from rushing to ensure their safety and that of others on the road.

A notable positive from this report is that, in stark contrast to the two fatalities recorded during the same period last year, there have been no deaths resulting from these accidents so far in 2025. This reflects a potential improvement in road safety awareness and responsible driving practices among the public.

The Fiji Police have committed to maintaining a visible presence to conduct traffic checks and promote safe driving practices. Drivers are encouraged to utilize Community Posts along highways to rest when needed, underscoring the importance of prioritizing safety above all else.

As the community gears up for the school season, it is crucial for all drivers to be conscious of their driving habits and the impact these can have. By fostering a commitment to road safety, the hope is that the upward trend in maintaining zero fatalities can continue, making Fiji’s roads safer for everyone.
