Zion Tokona, a promising weightlifter from Fiji, aims to set a new Oceania record in the junior 110-kilogram category at the upcoming Pacific Mini Games. The Marist Brothers High School Year 13 student has been focused on achieving this milestone for several months and believes he has the potential to succeed.
Tokona’s ambition is shared among the nine athletes selected by coach Henry Elder to represent Fiji at the Mini Games. “My personal target for these Mini Games is just to break the Oceania record. I haven’t broken one since last year, so I’m hoping to break it here at the Pacific Mini Games,” Tokona expressed enthusiastically.
Despite the pressure of balancing training with his mid-year exams scheduled just before the event, Tokona remains committed. Since beginning his weightlifting career at the young age of 14, he has continued to represent Fiji on various international platforms, aiming to leave a mark in the annals of the sport.
This determination aligns with the overall positive outlook for Fijian weightlifting, especially after notable achievements by fellow competitors like Nehemiah Elder, who previously secured silver medals in important competitions. These successes highlight the growing potential in young Fijian weightlifters and the support they receive from their coaches and community.
The upcoming Pacific Mini Games not only represents an opportunity for Tokona and his teammates to set personal and national records but also fortifies Fiji’s reputation in the international weightlifting scene. Their collective efforts and aspirations reflect a hopeful future, showcasing the strength and promise of Fiji’s youth in sports.
