Young athletes showcased their skills in the opening competition of the Fiji-New Zealand Invitational event, hosted by the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association at the Commander Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Walu Bay, Suva. The event featured a total of 30 bouts, commencing at midday and concluding in the early evening, creating an electrifying atmosphere filled with the sounds of punches, ringing bells, and the cheers of enthusiastic spectators.
Cam Todd, the head coach of the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association, expressed his excitement about the involvement and enthusiasm shown by the young boxers. He emphasized the bright future ahead for amateur boxing in Fiji, stating, “I’m really excited. I think Fiji has a massive future with amateur boxing and so much talent.” Todd noted that the young athletes are improving week by week, further fueling his optimism.
The preparation for the event included collaborative training sessions with the New Zealand team, showcasing the spirit of international camaraderie in sports. Looking ahead, Todd mentioned upcoming events for the association, including the Golden Glove national competition next week and aspirations for international competitions in the United States and England for both male and female boxers in 2024.
The competition is set to continue at Nausori Primary School today, promising more thrilling bouts for fans of amateur boxing.
