The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs has shown interest in partnering with the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission as it gears up for a nationwide initiative focused on truth and reconciliation. The Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Jone Navakamocea, recently held discussions with commission members to explore potential collaboration.

Navakamocea expressed enthusiasm regarding the innovative concepts proposed by the commission during their meeting. This gathering served as a platform for meaningful dialogue, particularly about how traditional leadership and iTaukei institutions can contribute to truth-telling, healing, and the overall process of nation-building.

This collaboration comes at a critical time in Fiji, as many community leaders, including those from the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma, have voiced the necessity for healing and forgiveness in light of the nation’s turbulent past, particularly after the coups in 1987 and 2000. Reverend Anil Reuben has emphasized the importance of sharing personal truths to overcome the historical wounds that still affect many individuals today.

The ongoing commitment to truth and reconciliation initiatives reflects a hopeful pathway toward healing for a nation still grappling with the remnants of its past. By creating open dialogues and encouraging individuals to share their experiences, the Ministry and the commission aim to foster a sense of collective healing and understanding within the community.

Public consultations are also underway, inviting the broader community to participate in this significant process, highlighting the optimism that together, they can pave the way for a brighter future for Fiji.
