Fiji’s New Tabua Permit Rule: What You Need to Know!

The public must obtain a permit to take a whale’s tooth (tabua) out of Fiji when traveling to other countries, as announced by the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Sivendra Michael, during a meeting in Labasa. This regulation, established in 2002, is aimed at ensuring the protection of this culturally significant item, which holds great importance for the iTaukei people.

Michael emphasized the necessity of this permit process, stating that individuals who fail to comply would face detention. He highlighted that the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) has records of past prosecutions due to non-compliance with this law. To legally export or import a tabua, travelers must first secure an approval letter from the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, followed by an export or import permit from the Ministry of Environment.

The Ministry enforces a strict quota of 16 tabua for export each month, although there is no specific quota for imports. However, it is essential for individuals to adhere to all legal requirements to ensure smooth processing. The approval letters and permits will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis, which means early application is crucial to avoid delays or issues with the monthly quota.

Previous initiatives have shown the importance of regulating the trade of tabua not just for cultural heritage, but also for wildlife conservation efforts. The ban on tabua import and export to the United States further underscores global conservation commitments.

This collaborative effort illustrates Fiji’s dedication to preserving its cultural identity while promoting responsible trade practices that protect endangered species. By implementing these measures, the government fosters a greater awareness of both cultural significance and ecological responsibility within the community, ensuring that future generations can appreciate and respect the heritage associated with tabua.
