The Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Fiji is set to intensify its road safety measures with the deployment of 12 new portable speed cameras from 28th January 2025 to 8th May 2025, during which the first set had recorded over 7,800 speeding violations on Viti Levu. This initiative is part of the LTA’s strategy to bolster traffic enforcement in high-risk areas where speeding remains a significant factor contributing to road accidents.
Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that the portable speed cameras represent a modern approach to road safety, providing greater flexibility for enforcement teams to adapt to changing traffic conditions. Equipped with high-definition imaging and real-time data transmission, these cameras serve not just as tools for penalties, but also as deterrents aimed at promoting responsible driving behavior among motorists.
The recent move aligns with LTA’s commitment to enhancing road safety without a revenue-driven motive. “Our goal is simple – to prevent tragedies before they happen,” Rokosawa stated, highlighting the importance of accountability in reducing speeding incidents. Officers will operate these cameras both during scheduled patrols and surprise operations to enhance the effectiveness of enforcement.
Earlier efforts to improve road safety have included the introduction of fixed speed and red-light cameras, which have established a foundation for these new portable devices. The LTA’s ongoing initiatives, including planned public awareness campaigns, aim to cultivate a community culture focused on responsible driving, which is essential as speeding accounted for a substantial portion of the total 66 road fatalities reported in 2023.
This new deployment reflects a proactive and innovative approach by the LTA to ensure that Fiji’s roads become safer for all users, as authorities remain optimistic that these measures will significantly reduce the number of traffic incidents, ultimately leading to a decline in fatalities. Together with continuous public education, these efforts can pave the way for a more secure driving environment, instilling hope for a future with safer roads in Fiji.
