Fiji's Parliament Session Kicks Off with Bold Legislative Agenda

Fiji’s New Parliament Session: What Legislative Changes Are Ahead?

Fiji’s President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, is set to inaugurate the new session of Parliament today, marking the beginning of the 2025-2026 Sitting Calendar. In his first address as head of state, Ratu Naiqama is anticipated to unveil the government’s legislative priorities for the upcoming year.

Elected last October with considerable support, Ratu Naiqama secured 37 votes compared to 16 for his challenger, Ratu Meli Tora. His agenda includes significant initiatives such as proposed amendments to the 2013 Constitution and adjustments to key electoral laws, coupled with a review of pivotal legislative acts, including the historic Public Health Act of 1935.

Following a recent Cabinet meeting, the Coalition Government has established an extensive Work Programme that outlines a series of important laws across various sectors. This includes governance, migration, election processes, as well as vital regulations addressing police conduct, national security, human trafficking, cyber-security, and the commercial use of marine resources.

The commencement of this opening session at 10 am highlights a proactive governance approach, prioritizing transparency and cooperation between lawmakers and the public. These proposed legislative initiatives are designed to tackle pressing socio-economic challenges and enhance citizen engagement, signaling a commitment to responsive governance in Fiji.

This new parliamentary calendar represents a hopeful step towards fostering constructive dialogue and improving the democratic process, ultimately enriching the lives of all Fijians.
