Fiji’s National Sports Conference: A Catalyst for Change

The Fiji National Sports Commission has convened sports leaders for the National Sporting Organisation (NSO) conference today, kicking off a two-day event that will tackle critical issues influencing the trajectory of sports in Fiji. This conference, themed “Sports – The Engine for Change,” places emphasis on governance, youth development, and how sports intertwine with national policy.

Opening remarks will be delivered by Fiji Sports Commission chief executive Peter Mazey and Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru. The agenda includes vital discussions on Fiji’s national sports policy, the impact of sports tourism, promoting inclusivity for individuals with disabilities, mental health concerns for elite athletes, and the increasingly prevalent digital leagues aimed at enhancing youth sports development.

One of the highlights of the conference will be the announcement of the 112 nominees for the upcoming 2024 Fiji Sports Awards during tonight’s nominee cocktail event. This year marks a significant increase in participation from various national sporting organizations, showcasing the dedication of athletes, coaches, teams, and sports administrators in shaping Fiji’s sporting landscape.

Mazey underscored the importance of the conference as a catalyst for action, urging stakeholders to not only engage in discussions but also to implement strategies that can harness sports as a means of community transformation. “It’s also a moment to celebrate our athletes’ accomplishments and honor those who have committed themselves to developing sports in Fiji,” he stated.

The participation of key stakeholders and international experts is anticipated to generate innovative ideas, bolster governance structures, and support the sustainable development of sports in Fiji. As the conference unfolds, there is a shared hope that these collaborative efforts will foster a brighter future for sports across the nation, further uniting the community through athletic pursuits and celebrating the achievements of its sportsmen and women.
