The Methodist Church of Fiji has unveiled its ambitious strategic plan for 2025–2026, which focuses on enhancing its ministry efforts beyond traditional church boundaries. President Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou has stated that this initiative is crucial in tackling pressing social issues, particularly the rising incidents of drug abuse affecting the community.
Reverend Turagavou expressed the church’s intent to reach out to individuals who feel marginalized and are currently outside the church’s influence, especially young adults facing socio-economic challenges. He called for pastors to develop outreach programs that have a positive impact on communities, particularly in areas known as “red zones,” where youth congregate, such as the streets of Suva.
He emphasized, “Many people who engage in criminal behavior or substance abuse lack the courage to seek help through traditional church services. It is our duty as the church to meet them where they are and help guide them toward a better path.” This sentiment echoes the church’s historical commitment to actively engage with community issues, as previously highlighted by Reverend Turagavou in other discussions regarding the church’s role in addressing drug abuse and related social problems.
The plan also aligns with concerns raised in past discussions about the alarming rise in drug-related issues and the need for collective action among the church, government, and community groups. This proactive approach underscores the church’s responsibility to be a beacon of hope and guidance as it seeks to foster collaboration among various sectors to tackle these escalating challenges.
In conclusion, the church’s commitment to addressing these social injustices presents a hopeful outlook for the community, showcasing the potential for transformative change when faith-based organizations lead the charge against pressing societal problems. Engaging the youth and at-risk populations highlights the importance of compassion, outreach, and proactive involvement in building a safer and healthier society.
