Media outlets in Fiji are being urged to broaden their coverage to include crucial topics like economic empowerment and reproductive health, particularly concerning women’s issues. Selai Korovusere, who is the Senior Violence Against Women and Girls Prevention Coordinator with UN Women Fiji, made these remarks during her address at the Women in Media Inaugural Conference 2025 in Suva.
Korovusere stressed the importance of sharing the untold stories of women, particularly those behind the scenes who prepare for significant events such as national expos. According to her, reflecting on these narratives and the challenges faced during these preparations is essential for media representation. She emphasized the need to highlight women’s experiences and issues more consistently in news coverage.
Moreover, Korovusere pointed out the current lack of investigative reporting, indicating that it has had a positive impact in the past when it exposed the truth behind certain matters. Journalists, she advised, should also consider the effects of their stories on families and especially children. She noted the powerful influence of social media in shaping public perceptions.
This conversation resonates with recent discussions at the conference, where the role of media in advocating for gender equality and protecting women’s rights was a central theme. Previous speakers highlighted the ethical responsibilities that journalists bear in reporting on sensitive issues like gender-based violence, underlining the need for a supportive environment for women journalists facing numerous challenges.
The overall tone of these discussions reflects a growing awareness and a hopeful outlook on improving women’s empowerment in Fiji’s media landscape. As the conference unfolds, it serves as a platform for encouraging solidarity among female journalists, inspiring them to amplify their voices and address the significant issues they confront in their work. There is a collective push for greater representation and safer working conditions, emphasizing the vital role of women in the news sector and the importance of fostering a more inclusive media environment.
