The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has ramped up its efforts to enhance road safety by taking strong measures against reckless driving. As of December 9, 2024, the LTA has cancelled 62 driving licenses and suspended another 21 due to a range of traffic violations.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted that this is part of a broader initiative, which also includes conducting 107 counselling sessions across various branches. These sessions aim to address irresponsible driving behaviors and have resulted in 1,366 first warnings, 297 second warnings, and 155 final warnings being issued to offenders.

Rokosawa emphasized that these actions are aligned with the LTA’s commitment to educating drivers about their responsibilities on the road and discouraging unsafe driving practices. He noted that extreme violations have led to the hold of 39 client IDs, and one case has been referred for further audit.

“Our rigorous measures underscore LTA’s zero-tolerance stance towards misconduct. We are dedicated to making our roads safer for everyone,” Rokosawa stated. He reaffirmed the Authority’s intention to impose more license cancellations if drivers fail to adhere to the law and endanger lives.

The measures taken by the LTA not only serve as punishment but are aimed at achieving a larger objective of saving lives and preventing accidents. By holding offenders accountable and removing dangerous drivers from the roads, the LTA believes that it can significantly decrease the incidence of preventable traffic accidents.

Each cancelled or suspended license represents one less potential risk on the road. The LTA is sending a clear message to all drivers: they must recognize their significant responsibility towards themselves and others who share the road.

This proactive approach by the LTA reflects a hopeful determination to foster safer driving habits in Fiji, potentially leading to a marked decrease in traffic-related incidents in the future. It represents a collective effort to ensure that every individual understands the impact of their actions while behind the wheel.
