Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is actively seeking answers regarding the absence of Christopher Pryde, the reinstated Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who has not yet returned to his duties following his reinstatement on January 7, 2025. This situation has arisen despite the fact that Pryde was suspended in April 2023 due to allegations which have since been addressed.

Rabuka voiced his serious concerns over Pryde’s continued stay in New Zealand, underlining the need to understand whether the matter requires further consideration by the Constitutional Offices Commission. Previously, Pryde had been reinstated following a decision from President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, yet he has not fulfilled his role, prompting questions about governance within Fiji’s legal framework.

This ongoing situation echoes previous instances within the Fijian judiciary, where the complexities surrounding accountability and transparency have been evident. Chief Justice Salesi Temo, chair of the Judicial Services Commission (JSC), has signified plans to convene a meeting to further discuss Pryde’s situation, emphasizing the critical nature of this issue.

Pryde’s case is significant, not only due to the personal ramifications for him but also because it raises broader questions about legal reforms and institutional integrity in Fiji. Stakeholders in the legal community and the public share a common hope that addressing these complexities could lead to essential reforms, fostering a more transparent and trustworthy judicial system.

In light of the ongoing discussions, Assistant DPP Pauline Madanavosa has assumed the responsibilities within the Office of the DPP, ensuring that operations continue smoothly during this transitional period. The situation underscores the importance of accountability in public service roles and the continual quest for improvements within the legal framework of Fiji.
