Fiji’s Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, recently praised the substantial improvements in the services provided by the Legal Aid Commission over the past 10 to 15 years. Addressing Parliament during the debate on the “Consolidated Review Report of the Legal Aid Commission 2018 to 2023,” which was presented on December 3, 2024, he acknowledged the commission’s efforts to enhance access to legal assistance, especially in remote areas.
Turaga emphasized the commission’s commitment to outreach, with legal aid professionals conducting island circuits to connect with communities in regions like Lau, Lomaiviti, and Kadavu, even hosting special sessions in Rotuma. These initiatives allow many cases to be addressed on-site, alleviating the need for individuals to travel to Suva for legal proceedings.
However, he noted disparities in compensation between Legal Aid lawyers and those at the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), revealing that Legal Aid lawyers manage a heavier caseload compared to their FICAC counterparts. Turaga advocated for a potential bonus system to fairly reward Legal Aid lawyers for their hard work and extensive caseloads, acknowledging the unique challenges they face that private practitioners do not encounter.
In light of concerns about workloads, similar discussions were brought up in previous articles that highlighted the need for a fair compensation framework for Legal Aid lawyers, as many are handling upwards of a hundred cases annually. This recognition of the growing demands on Legal Aid lawyers reflects a broader conversation about legal reform in Fiji and the importance of providing adequate support for those in the justice system.
