Fifteen presidents from various netball associations across Fiji have convened to demand a Special General Meeting (SGM) after expressing a motion of no confidence in the current executive committee of Netball Fiji (NF). In a letter addressed to NF President RubyAnn Sorovaki, the group outlined their concerns, which include nepotism, the Fiji Pearls’ disappointing 16th place world ranking, and a perceived lack of professionalism and transparency within the organization. They proposed two motions: the first for the executive committee to resign based on these concerns, and the second to appoint an interim committee for a temporary period of four months to rectify the situation.
The letter has been duly signed by presidents representing several local netball associations, including those from Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, and others, aligning with the NF constitution’s requirements. This organized move reflects a significant sentiment among local leaders advocating for heightened accountability and improved governance.
In response, Netball Fiji acknowledged the concerns raised and affirmed its commitment to uphold constitutional processes regarding the SGM. They expressed a dedication to ensuring transparency and good governance, emphasizing a collaborative approach with affiliated districts and the council to address these issues fairly. Netball Fiji reassured its members that concerns would be handled in accordance with the governing principles and best interests of all stakeholders.
This initiative follows recent discussions during NF’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), where representatives from various networks highlighted the importance of constitutional reviews and improved communication among districts. Leaders noted that a SGM presents a pivotal opportunity for reform, aiming to create a more democratic environment that encourages collaboration and inclusivity.
As the sports community in Fiji navigates this potential turning point, there remains a hopeful outlook for revitalization and growth in netball. The efforts to enhance local competitions and establish pathways for player development indicate a sincere intent to foster a thriving netball culture in the region. Stakeholders are optimistic that the upcoming SGM will lead to meaningful dialogues and positive changes benefiting the sport’s future in Fiji.
