The kava industry in Fiji is thriving, thanks to the unwavering commitment of local farmers who form the backbone of this vital sector. Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna emphasized the importance of these farmers during a recent event where he presented kava farming equipment to the Naikorokoro Kava Farmers of Togalevu in Rewa. He stated that without the dedication of farmers, the export industry would not be sustainable.

Tunabuna highlighted the government’s efforts to revitalize the kava sector, which includes increased investment in farming support, research initiatives, youth involvement, and development in export practices. He acknowledged the significant contribution of Naikorokoro Village’s farmers, with over 20 registered suppliers delivering impressive volumes of kava—often exceeding 500 kilograms—to Lami Kava.

Lami Kava is one of the longest-standing exporters of kava in Fiji, responsible for sending 80 percent of its merchandise to the United States and selling the rest locally as well as online. Notably, in 2015, Fiji’s kava industry earned approximately eight million dollars; however, this figure is expected to soar to an impressive 53 million dollars by 2024.

Minister Tunabuna expressed optimism that the kava sector serves as a crucial economic buffer for the country. This continued growth not only underscores the potential of kava as an impactful agricultural export but also reflects the hard work and dedication of those within the industry. The future looks promising for Fiji’s kava farmers, ensuring their indispensable role in bolstering the nation’s economy.
