Fiji is set to enhance public safety with the launch of a new initiative called the “Safe City Project,” aimed at employing advanced surveillance technology across the nation. Telecom Fiji and the Fiji Police Force have officially signed an agreement to roll out the project, which will incorporate high-speed fiber connectivity and CCTV infrastructure that will cover the Suva to Nausori corridor.

The surveillance video feeds will be continuously monitored at the Fiji Police Command Centre located at the Central Police Station in Suva. Charles Goundar, Chief Executive of Telecom Fiji, expressed pride in collaborating with the Fiji Police, emphasizing that this project not only aims to improve public safety but also serves as a foundational step towards developing smarter cities in the future.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu highlighted the importance of integrating technology into modern policing, asserting that real-time monitoring paired with enhanced coverage will empower law enforcement to respond more effectively to incidents and deter criminal activity. He described this initiative as a significant advancement in policing, consistent with the objective of maximizing technology’s utility for public safety.

The successful implementation of this project along the Suva-Nausori corridor could lead to wider replication throughout Fiji, showcasing a commitment to utilizing innovation as a means of creating safer communities.

Furthermore, this project aligns with previous discussions about the modernization of the Fiji Police Force through the integration of more advanced surveillance technologies, including proposals to utilize drones and enhanced CCTV networks. These strategies aim to leverage data analytics and predictive policing techniques to better allocate resources and prevent crime.

The optimism surrounding these advancements reflects a hopeful future for Fiji’s public safety landscape, as they may lead to a reduction in crime rates and ultimately enhance the quality of life for residents. By adapting to contemporary challenges through the strategic use of technology, there is potential for fostering trust in law enforcement and ensuring a safer environment for all Fijians.
