The Fijian Cabinet has granted an extension of three years for the Village Boundary Geographical Positioning System (GPS) Survey and mapping, utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. This initiative, led by the iTaukei Land Management Unit (LMU) under the iTaukei Land and Fisheries Commission (TLFC), aims to accurately delineate village boundaries for legal and developmental purposes.
As of this year, the survey has successfully mapped 662 out of 1,152 registered villages into the GIS system, leaving 490 villages pending completion of their surveys. The extension’s primary goals are to:
1. Ensure precise demarcation of village territories.
2. Alleviate land disputes through reliable digital references.
3. Facilitate structured planning, investment, and infrastructure development.
4. Enhance access to essential government services.
5. Strengthen climate resilience by incorporating boundaries into disaster preparedness strategies.
6. Improve iTaukei land governance through a comprehensive GIS platform that integrates land tenure, cultural heritage, and natural resources.
This undertaking highlights Fiji’s dedication to sustainable development and community empowerment. Recent improvements in land management practices, as evidenced by the collaboration of the Ministry of Lands with Geoscience Australia to refine Fiji’s geodetic datum, and the ambitious plans for extensive land surveying by the iTaukei Lands and Fisheries Commission, indicate a strong commitment to revitalizing indigenous land management and fostering economic opportunities for these communities.
The collaborative efforts are paving the way for increased governance, enabling better resource management, and promoting sustainable practices that ultimately enhance the well-being of Fiji’s indigenous population.
In summary, the GPS survey extension represents a vital movement toward effective land management, focusing on empowerment and sustainability for the iTaukei people, thereby supporting a hopeful future for community development in Fiji.
