Fiji’s Future Leaders: Student Prefects Step Up for Change!

Fifty executive prefects have been selected to join the 2025 student council at Tilak High School in Lautoka, with Epeli Rokotunidau appointed as head boy and Kaliyyah Lalabalavu as head girl. During a ceremony, the newly elected leaders expressed their gratitude and recognition of the responsibilities that come with their positions.

Rokotunidau emphasized the council’s role in leadership, stating, “This badge symbolizes leadership but more importantly, it gives a sense of collective responsibility to create a positive and inclusive environment for all.” He pledged to be a collaborative leader, committed to improving the school for everyone.

This recent induction aligns with a broader trend across various schools in Fiji, where newly appointed leaders are taking on their roles with a strong sense of duty and purpose. Similar to leaders at All Saints Secondary School, Miriama Watikili and Mesake Cokanauto, who have shared their gratitude and commitment to their peers, Rokotunidau and Lalabalavu’s aspirations reflect the growing belief in student leadership as a pivotal element in fostering positive school environments.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has also reiterated the importance of these leadership positions in previous speeches, noting the role of student leaders in navigating challenges like peer pressure and bullying. This context underlines the supportive framework surrounding young leaders in Fiji and highlights the hope for a brighter future through their dedication and community support.

As student prefects across Fiji take on the challenge of leading their peers, there is a clear indication of resilience and ambition among Fiji’s youth. Their commitment serves as an inspiration not only within their schools but also within their communities, demonstrating that with determination and support, they can effect meaningful change.
