The ongoing loss of Indigenous knowledge, particularly in rural areas, is a significant concern addressed by the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs in Fiji. The ministry is focused on preserving this knowledge by recording traditional practices and information. In tandem with this initiative, the Fijian government is seeking membership in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which will bolster efforts to protect Indigenous knowledge through legal frameworks.

WIPO plays a vital role in assisting countries to manage and safeguard their intellectual property, fostering innovation, creativity, and economic growth. Joeli Ditoka, the Acting Deputy Secretary for Policy, pointed out that WIPO’s Lisbon System offers vital legal protection for traditional products, essential for promoting sustainable practices.

While gaining membership in WIPO is a significant step, Ditoka emphasized the country’s responsibility in monitoring and enforcing protections against violations. This enforcement challenge underscores the need for vigilance even after accession to international treaties.

Collectively, the government and the Ministry are optimistic about making progress in safeguarding unique Indigenous knowledge through national and regional collaboration efforts. Just as previous articles have highlighted, initiatives like the Geographical Indications (GIs) system could improve the visibility of Fijian traditional products globally, potentially boosting local economies and preserving cultural heritage.

As Fiji advances towards these goals, there is a hopeful outlook for strengthening the resilience of Indigenous communities, preserving their rich heritage, and promoting economic empowerment through sustainable practices. Through collaborations and commitment to safeguarding traditional knowledge, the future holds promise for a prosperous economy intertwined with cultural preservation.
