Fiji has upgraded its economic status from a Low Middle-Income Country to a High Middle-Income Country, but concerningly, the health status indicators for the nation have stagnated over the past decade. This finding was highlighted in the recent Health Sector Review Report 2024 by the World Bank, bringing attention to a growing disparity between economic advancement and health outcomes.

Minister for Health, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, pointed out that despite increased income levels, health indicators in Fiji have remained flat or even worsened compared to those in countries with similar economic standings. To counter this trend, the ministry is placing a renewed focus on reshaping health services, particularly emphasizing Primary Health Care (PHC).

Dr. Lalabalavu stated, “The Ministry is working with several partners, including the Ministry of Finance and the World Bank, to modernize health facilities supporting a transformed Primary Health Care service for our population.” He underscored that PHC is vital for addressing significant health challenges, such as non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and endemic infections.

The urgency for reform is echoed by Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health, who has identified that Fiji’s health indicators align more closely with those of lower-income nations. He emphasized the continuing prevalence of NCDs and the impact of climate-sensitive diseases exacerbated by global challenges and the recent COVID-19 pandemic’s aftermath, which left a notable shortage of healthcare professionals.

The report from the World Bank also underscores the importance of enhancing digital health initiatives, creating integrated hospital networks, and promoting healthier lifestyles as part of a holistic approach to reform. The private health sector’s growth over the past decade presents a significant opportunity to complement public healthcare efforts, particularly in improving medical diagnostic capabilities and local supply chains for health products.

As Fiji embarks on this crucial transformation, the collaborative efforts underway involving both public and private sectors signify a positive step towards a healthier future. With strategic investments and reforms, there is hope that health outcomes in Fiji can see meaningful improvements, ultimately benefitting the overall well-being and economic stability of the population.
