Fiji's E-Ticketing: Struggles and Innovations Ahead

Fiji’s E-Ticketing: Progress or Pitfall?

Fiji’s e-ticketing system for public transport, which began in 2017, continues to encounter challenges that impact users. Vijay Kumar, the director of Westbus, which services the Nadi-Denarau route, emphasized the necessity for enhanced accessibility to e-ticketing cards. Currently, passengers must visit Vodafone outlets for registration, which he believes poses a significant barrier. He advocates for making e-transport cards readily available at bus stands to improve user compliance.

The e-ticketing system was designed to reduce cash transactions and curb revenue loss to illegal operators; however, many passengers still opt for cash payments due to difficulties in obtaining e-cards. This situation is further complicated by fines levied by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) against drivers for accepting cash.

Irfaz Mohammed from Vodafone Fiji recognized the issues faced by users and assured that the company is working on resolving these challenges. He mentioned that the availability of top-ups at various agents may vary based on individual preferences, but Vodafone remains committed to improving the system’s accessibility and user experience.

A positive step forward is the introduction of a new e-ticketing app that will enable passengers to manage their fare payments more conveniently. The app is set to offer features such as balance tracking, transaction history, and remote card top-ups via M-PAiSA. This move towards digitization aligns with the government’s initiatives to modernize Fiji’s transportation infrastructure.

Moreover, additional projects are expected to enhance various modes of transport, including shipping and taxis, which demonstrates a commitment to ongoing improvements and innovation in the public transport sector. The optimism surrounding these developments signifies a collective aim to create a more efficient and accessible transport system for all Fijians.

In conclusion, while there are ongoing challenges, the integration of technology and user-friendly solutions provides a hopeful outlook for the future of public transportation in Fiji, suggesting a commitment to enhancing the travel experience for all citizens.
