Fiji’s Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sitiveni Rabuka, will not attend the upcoming third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Xiamen, scheduled for May 28 to 29. Instead, Fiji’s Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua, will represent the nation at the meeting. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will preside over the event.
The meeting aims to foster in-depth discussions on comprehensive cooperation between China and Pacific Island countries, as well as international and regional issues of mutual concern. This aligns with ongoing efforts to establish a more robust community between China and the Pacific nations, focusing on a shared future.
Fiji’s absence from this particular meeting comes on the heels of Prime Minister Rabuka’s scheduled trip to China from August 12 to 21, where he is anticipated to engage in significant discussions with Chinese leaders regarding bilateral relations and collaborative development measures. This visit highlights the evolving partnership between China and Fiji, which celebrates 49 years of diplomatic relations this year.
Other Pacific leaders will join Rabuka in discussions about regional cooperation during his visit in August, emphasizing the interconnectedness of these nations and their collective interests in fostering a stable and prosperous Pacific region.
The focus on strengthening ties and understanding in Pacific diplomacy reflects a positive trend towards collaboration and mutual respect among countries facing common global challenges. The outcomes of such meetings and visits could pave the way for enhanced cooperation and understanding in the Pacific region, promoting peace and development for all involved.
