Fiji will host the 14th Oceania Swimming Championship from May 8-13, marking what tournament manager Eugene Panuve described as “a milestone moment” for Fiji Swimming. The six-day meet will bring top swimmers from across the Pacific to compete on Fijian soil and is being positioned by organisers as both a high-performance contest and a legacy event for the local sport.

“Hosting the Oceania Swimming Championship is a big opportunity for Fiji Swimming, not only to showcase local talent, but also to demonstrate the country’s ability to deliver world-class sporting events,” Panuve said, underlining the significance of staging a regional championship of this scale. He said preparations have been under way for months as officials, coaches and volunteers work to ensure the competition runs to international standards.

Officials say the focus has been on meeting technical and operational requirements so that visiting teams and officials find facilities and event management comparable to other major meets in the region. Volunteers, coaches and athletes have been mobilised to support logistics, athlete services and event delivery, with organisers promising a “memorable experience both in and out of the pool.” No participant list has been released yet, but the Oceania championships typically draw national squads and emerging talents from island nations across the Pacific.

Organisers are also emphasising the championship’s potential legacy for swimming in Fiji. Panuve highlighted the inspirational value of elite competition for young athletes: “Young athletes will have the rare chance to witness elite performance up close, motivating them to pursue excellence in the sport.” The meet is expected to provide exposure for Fiji’s swimmers, opportunities for local coaches and officials to gain experience, and a platform for talent identification ahead of future regional and international events.

The announcement comes as Fiji continues to raise its profile in several sports, following recent individual successes and increased investment in athlete development. For Fiji Swimming, hosting the Oceania Championship is intended to accelerate that momentum by strengthening local pathways and showcasing the nation’s ability to host major sporting events.

With the countdown to May underway, attention will turn to finalising entries, event schedules and accreditation for teams. Organisers have said further details, including the full competition program and participating countries, will be released in the coming weeks as preparations conclude.
