Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has highlighted the critical need for cooperation among all Parliament representatives as the government embarks on the review of the 2013 Constitution. During his parliamentary address, Rabuka acknowledged that the current Constitution has facilitated governmental transitions during the past two general elections, yet emphasized that revising it is essential to truly capture the voices and aspirations of the Fijian people.
He stated, “If we have to go back to them and solicit their support. Canvass their views in a special committee or another commission. Whichever way we are going to solicit that support. We are currently the voices of the people.” This call reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that the constitutional reform process is inclusive.
Moreover, Rabuka recognized that there may be resistance to reviewing the Constitution but affirmed that it is their duty to address it as proposed in the Constitution Amendment Bill. He expressed the importance of an engaged citizenry, inviting all Fijians to actively participate in shaping the laws that govern them.
The Prime Minister’s sentiments resonate with previous discussions he has had about the necessity for a constitution that reflects the consensus of Fiji’s diverse, multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural society. He called attention to the historical context of constitutional debates in Fiji, reminding all involved of shared legacies that bind the nation together, regardless of individual backgrounds.
This constitutional review aligns with the broader objectives of inclusivity and accountability, addressing public concerns that have lingered since the Constitution’s implementation. With an emphasis on democratic dialogue, the government aims to foster a collaborative atmosphere where diverse perspectives contribute to future governance.
Given the current global context where ethnic and political divisions often escalate into conflict, Rabuka’s approach is a hopeful indication that Fiji is striving towards unity and reconciliation through representative consultation and democratic engagement. The positive steps being taken in this constitutional review can help rebuild trust among citizens and reinforce a governance framework that reflects the aspirations of all Fijians.
