Barbara Malimali, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), has commenced a period of leave following a request from the Judicial Services Commission (JSC). This decision is aimed at ensuring the ongoing Commission of Inquiry (COI) can proceed without any interference. Lisiate Fotofili, a magistrate and former prosecutor, has been appointed as the acting Deputy Commissioner during her absence, effective from February 19, 2025.
Tomasi Bainivalu, the secretary of the JSC, confirmed that Malimali agreed to take leave to support the integrity and efficacy of the inquiry, which is focusing on allegations of abuse of office linked to her previous role as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. This inquiry is seen as critical for bolstering public confidence in Fiji’s governance and judicial processes—reflecting a commitment to transparency and accountability.
The JSC’s request for Malimali to step back symbolizes a proactive approach to maintaining the credibility of FICAC as it navigates this sensitive investigation. The findings of the COI are anticipated to yield insights that could not only address the current concerns but also promote potential reforms within Fiji’s governance framework.
As investigations unfold, many in Fiji hold hope that the outcomes will reinforce the importance of integrity within public institutions, ultimately fostering a stronger commitment to ethical governance. The ongoing efforts symbolize a vital step towards restoring trust and ensuring that accountability remains at the forefront of Fiji’s judicial landscape.
