Opposition Member of Parliament Praveen Bala has highlighted significant climate milestones achieved by Fiji during the tenure of the former FijiFirst Government, which have garnered global acknowledgment and respect. In a recent statement, Bala reacted to Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad’s defense of the large 56-member delegation traveling to Baku, Azerbaijan, pointing out that Fiji’s proactive approach to climate issues positioned it as a leader in international climate advocacy. A key moment was Fiji’s role as the chair during the COP 23 conference in Bonn in 2017, showcasing the nation’s commitment to meaningful climate action.
Bala emphasized that the previous government’s efforts were crucial in promoting climate finance, enhancing regional resilience, and establishing strong policies in line with the Paris Agreement. However, he expressed criticism regarding the size of the current delegation to Baku, arguing that many members of this extensive team could contribute more effectively to Fiji’s climate resilience efforts domestically, where their skills are urgently needed.
He also raised concerns about the potential negative effects of such a large delegation on public services and overall productivity, especially as many Fijians are grappling with rising living costs and economic challenges. Bala concluded by urging the government to provide clearer answers to the citizens regarding these pressing issues.
This dialogue reflects a growing sentiment among politicians and citizens alike, promoting accountability in government spending while advocating for effective climate action. As Fiji continues to navigate economic hurdles, there is hope that a focused and balanced approach to climate resilience can lead to sustainable development and improved living conditions for Fijians.
