Fiji’s Call to Action: Ensuring Safety for Women and Children

The call for a collective effort to ensure a safe environment for all Fijians, especially women and children, was emphasized by Opposition whip Jone Usamate during the observance of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

Mr. Usamate reiterated his party’s unwavering commitment to combating gender-based violence, highlighting the crucial need for ongoing initiatives and leadership in addressing this significant issue. He expressed appreciation for the efforts of Minister Lynda Tabuya, acknowledging the importance of continuity in these endeavors.

In a notable instance from the previous Parliament, the opposition condemned negative remarks made by a member regarding gender violence, reaffirming that such attitudes are unacceptable. Mr. Usamate asserted that leadership bears the responsibility to support anti-violence measures.

Fiji’s adherence to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was also underscored, emphasizing the country’s legal and ethical duty to combat gender inequality and violence. He emphasized the fundamental human right of every woman and child to live without fear, advocating for their freedom regardless of personal beliefs, religion, or attire.

Mr. Usamate framed the opposition’s commitment as a dedication to human rights, stressing that it is a moral failing to harm or oppress anyone, especially women and children. He reassured citizens that they should never live in fear in their country.

Overall, this strong statement reflects a hopeful commitment from Fiji’s leadership to engage in the ongoing fight against gender-based violence, fostering a safer and more inclusive society for everyone. There remains a united front among leaders to ensure that every individual can enjoy their rights fully.
