Filipe Makrava, a resident of Oinafa, emphasized the importance of political credibility during a public consultation held by the Fiji Law Reform Commission in Rotuma. He advocated for a defined set of qualifications for candidates vying for parliamentary seats, arguing that integrity should be a fundamental requirement over wealth or social standing.

Makrava highlighted the flaws in the current election system, which he believes allows inappropriate candidates to achieve positions of power with only minimal vetting—specifically, a nomination fee of $5000. He stated, “If a person is not qualified under the whole system to become a member of Parliament, then that person should not win,” underscoring the need for a candidate evaluation system that ensures only those who meet certain ethical and professional standards are eligible to lead.

His comments arose in the context of discussions related to reserved seats for women but extended to all aspiring Members of Parliament. Makrava expressed concern that the current criteria could lead to unfit individuals being elected, urging the Elections Office to establish stringent eligibility criteria applicable to all candidates. “If we want to have a credible Parliament, we start from scratch,” he said.

This call for enhanced political standards aligns with broader conversations in Fiji surrounding electoral reforms. Recent discussions have also called for measures such as criminal background checks for candidates, improved transparency in the nomination process, and greater inclusivity in governance. Just as a former political party general secretary pointed out the need for candidates to be free from criminal charges, Makrava’s plea resonates with general concerns that the qualifications for political candidates need to be raised significantly.

Such discussions reflect a growing sentiment among Fijians regarding the necessity of electoral reforms aimed at enhancing public trust in the political process. As the nation approaches upcoming elections, there is a hopeful outlook for achieving a political environment characterized by integrity and accountability, creating room for capable leaders who can contribute meaningfully to the governance of Fiji.
