Fiji’s Call for Inclusive Governance: Are Voices Being Silenced?

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has urged the Coalition Government to cease silencing the voices of Fijians, including youth, civil society, and opposition members. Speaking during a parliamentary session, Lal reiterated the need for governance that embodies inclusivity, fairness, and compassion—values emphasized by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

Lal criticized the government for blocking citizens from official social media pages, restricting participation in consultations, and dismissing legitimate concerns raised by the public. He stated, “Respectful dialogue does not mean silencing dissent or turning government platforms into echo chambers.” He expressed that Fiji is at a critical juncture and that Fijians deserve a government that genuinely serves all citizens, rather than just a politically favored few.

This call for greater inclusivity and accountability resonates with earlier comments Lal made regarding the government’s focus on political theatrics over pressing issues affecting ordinary Fijians, such as rising living costs and declining public services. His insistence on real leadership reflects a broader sentiment within the opposition, advocating for collaboration and constructive governance.

The recent discussions also highlight a growing acknowledgment within Fiji’s political landscape regarding the importance of responsible dialogue, both offline and online. Encouraging open discourse among citizens can foster a politically engaged public, providing a platform for collective aspirations and a better understanding of national issues.

In this context, the ongoing call for unity and accountability presents an opportunity for a hopeful and constructive future for Fiji. Fostering an environment where all citizens can participate without fear of suppression may enhance public trust and drive meaningful changes in governance for the benefit of all Fijians.
