Fiji’s Bold Step Towards Disaster Resilience: New Centers on the Horizon

The Ministry of Disaster Management in Fiji is set to enhance disaster preparedness by constructing multi-purpose evacuation centers across the country’s four divisions and retrofitting existing centers to meet humanitarian standards. Minister Sakiasi Ditoka announced that a $1 million budget has been allocated for refurbishing 20 existing evacuation centers, as well as the construction of two new ones within the current financial year.

This initiative follows the successful retrofitting of the Evacuation Center in Yavusania, Nadi, which was officially inaugurated recently. This project was financed by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and implemented in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Save the Children Fiji. The Yavusania center, which cost $203,250, aims to provide protection to vulnerable populations during emergencies and serve as a central community gathering point, thereby enhancing overall resilience and safety in the region.

Minister Ditoka emphasized that these projects are a testament to the government’s commitment to improving community resilience against the challenges posed by climate change. He expressed gratitude to KOICA and IOM for their significant contributions, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving these milestones.

This proactive approach reflects Fiji’s dedication to not only protecting its citizens from natural disasters but also fostering a culture of preparedness and resilience that looks towards the future. By integrating community needs into disaster management strategies, Fiji is paving the way for a safer and more secure environment for all its residents.
