The Local Government Ministry is prioritizing the relocation and resettlement of over 1,000 households threatened with eviction from various informal settlements in Fiji. Among the affected areas are the Veidogo Settlement in Vatuwaqa, Naidiri Settlement in Tacirua, and the Fiji Muslim League Settlement in Nabua.

Minister Maciu Nalumisa announced that the Ministry has developed a comprehensive five-year relocation and resettlement policy aimed at providing a structured approach to help those at risk of eviction. This initiative aims to address the immediate needs of 1,062 households who have received eviction notices this financial year.

To facilitate this process, the Ministry is collaborating with several government agencies, including the i-Taukei Land Trust Board and the Ministry of Land, ensuring a coordinated response to the challenges posed by displacement. Nalumisa emphasized the importance of cooperation in creating effective relocation plans that align with international human rights standards, particularly the right to adequate housing and community involvement in decision-making.

Additionally, the Minister mentioned that a review of the Informal Settlement Act 2021-2022 has been approved by the cabinet to clarify the relocation process. The review will provide better support to vulnerable groups, along with offering assistance with transportation and identifying suitable relocation sites, especially in cases where no designated areas are currently available.

This initiative reflects a compassionate approach by the government to address the needs of families facing eviction, and represents an opportunity for positive change in housing policy, emphasizing community welfare and stability. Through collaborative efforts, there is hope for a smooth transition that not only meets immediate housing needs but also contributes to long-term community resilience and security.
