The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is taking significant steps towards enhancing road safety in Fiji by planning to install ten new speed cameras and repairing any malfunctioning ones already in place. This initiative is aimed at reducing reckless driving and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations. Assistant Transport Minister Naisa Tuinaceva emphasized that speed cameras are key tools in lowering the number of accidents on the roads.

The minister set ambitious targets for the nation, aiming for a 50 percent reduction in vehicle accidents and a 40 percent decrease in fatalities by the year 2025. He remarked that speeding remains the leading traffic violation, highlighting that improving the situation requires more than just manpower; hence, the installation of additional cameras is essential.

LTA Board Chair Inosi Kuridrani reinforced this message, citing evidence that speed cameras effectively encourage drivers to respect speed limits. With reports showing a substantial decrease in violations in areas equipped with cameras, he noted the portable nature of the cameras, which allows for flexible deployment across different locations in Fiji to enhance enforcement.

This undertaking builds on previous initiatives by the LTA, which included trials of portable speed cameras aimed at bolstering traffic enforcement and reducing accidents. Last year, speeding accounted for nearly 40 percent of the road fatalities in Fiji, making the need for such measures even more pressing.

Overall, these combined efforts demonstrate a strong commitment to creating safer driving conditions, fostering responsible road behavior, and ultimately saving lives in Fiji. With the implementation of these measures and increased public awareness, there is optimism that the community can work together towards a future where road safety is recognized as a collective responsibility, leading to a significant reduction in fatal incidents.
