Fiji’s Bold Move: Is Constitutional Reform the Key to National Unity?

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica has reiterated the significance of constitutional reform in Fiji, advocating that the Constitution should serve as a unifying document that empowers citizens rather than dividing them. While contributing to the parliamentary debate regarding the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025, Kamikamica emphasized that the proposed bill aims to realistically review and amend the current Constitution within legal boundaries.

Reflecting on past efforts, he drew a parallel with the 1997 constitutional reform process, declaring that a thorough review is essential for fostering national identity and enhancing democratic governance. Kamikamica remarked, “This is not merely a legal or political exercise; it is a matter of national identity, governance, and the preservation of democratic principles.”

This message aligns with ongoing dialogues within Fiji’s leadership regarding the need for a constitutional framework that truly represents the Fijian people. Previous discussions highlighted that the 2013 Constitution has faced criticism for not sufficiently embodying the will of the populace, as it was established post-coup without adequate public engagement. Prominent figures, including Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, have echoed Kamikamica’s sentiments, advocating for a constitution that fosters inclusivity and reflects the aspirations of all citizens.

Despite recent setbacks in obtaining the necessary parliamentary support for this amendment, there persists an optimistic outlook for continued dialogue and collaboration among political leaders. The ongoing discussions signal a hopeful trajectory towards a governance system that invites citizen participation and addresses the diverse voices within the Fijian society.

As Fiji navigates these complex political landscapes, the push for constitutional reform not only highlights the challenges but also promises a collective opportunity for reflection and healing, ultimately aiming to unite the nation under a governance structure that is responsive to the needs and rights of all its people.
